March Update 3/22/19

Posted 3/22/2019 8:46am by Sam Bellamy.

Spring is finally here!!! In true March style the cool weather is hanging around, with the possibility of frost something we still have to be conscious about. Hopefully once we reach April we'll have turned the corner on the temperature and it will make a difference for all the crops. For a look at what's happening around the farm follow us on Facebook and Instagram!

In the Field: The early crops of greens are coming in, although still in small amounts. During the warmer days everything grows quickly but as soon as we get some cooler weather the growth slows back down. The strawberry field is full of beautiful white blooms! Due to the risk of frost we're still having to cover them for cool nights with a protective row cover, which in turn prevents the honey bees from pollinating the flowers. This means that until the risk of frost is gone they won't really get into full production.

In the Greenhouse: The greenhouse is full of new life these days! In addition to all the spring greens we've been starting, there are some early tomato plants that will soon be planted in the field tunnels. Also, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, and zinnias promising the flavors and colors of summer!

The ICI: Due to Spring Break there will not be a market NEXT WEEK at the The International Culinary Institute of Myrtle Beach at Market Common. The following week we'll be back on the regular schedule of Thursday afternoons from 1:00-6:00.

The selection of produce varies from week to week, depending on how things are growing. As the crops in the tunnels continue to mature and the carrots and strawberries in the field get ready for harvest we'll have more and more to bring! We also have expanded our selection of All Natural, Non-GMO grits, cornmeal, and Carolina Gold rice from Geechie Boy Mill in SC.

Our Farm Market: Due to the weather and how the corps are growing we're waiting until April to RE-OPEN our Farm Market. We don't have a date set yet but will let you know as soon as we do.
