October 3 is Farm Heritage Day
If you are new to the area or did not grow up in rural Carolina low country you have a very unique opporunity this October 3. We will have some valuable people sharing their knowlegde, skills and experience. You will be albe to talk to some people who can give you first hand history. You will be able to see indigo plants, see the dyeing process and ask questions about it's history. If you think you have seen blacksmithing you may be amazed to see and hear how Meck Hartsfield came to understand iron and metal working. If you are like myself and you read about swords in the Middle ages being made of such strength to cut other swords you wonder if that could be true. Then you read about swords with intricate designs and patterns forged into the extremely hardened steel. Swords that are truly beautiful to look at. Again you wonder if it could be true? Find out from Meck. He has studied from Master craftsman blacksmiths who are known throughout the blacksmithing world.
In years past we have been fortunate to have many really quality people to share themselves with others. For several years the many re-enactors shared their knowlegde. People such as James White , Fred Johnson, Landis White and Marvin Nicholson. Believe me, you can learn a lot about history from some of these people. Regretfully, we do not have these people scheduled. But they are appreciated for their input in the past and their continued input in the coummunity. There are many people who have not been able to continue to attend for many reasons, health, conflicts and death. I say that because it makes you appreciate and value these people more.
In todays world guns are often the topic that draws those who love guns and those who think they are a danger to society. Regardless of which side you may be on, a visit with Carl Hannekin can enlighten your appreciation of guns. How they were made, the kinds of people who made them, the history of how guns developed, myths about old black powder guns, these are just some of the interesting aspects that Carl can help you understand. Visit with someone who can pick a gun up and tell you more about the gun than you can imagine. Someone who has made replicas of famous guns, has made guns for motion pictures ( The Patriot ), and even made a replica of the very earlist attempts of a gun.
One of the high lights for many people is the opportunity to see the indigo dyeing process. Faye Ahuja has worked with Cathy Perry to use the indigo plant to give wool or cotton a natural steadfast color that for centuries was considered a treasure throughout the world. the history of indigo is fascinating. This is articularly true for our are right here. The farm gets it's name from the Indigo Run which borders the farm and has quite a history of it's own. We are in an area where indigo was grown during the 1700's
. Farm Heritage Day has so many people it is not easy to cover it all. Please check back as I intend to continue to add to this blog.
